Axel Tuanzebe helped Aston Villa secure their return to the Premier League on Monday, but does the promising young defender have a future at his parent club Manchester United?
The Villans beat Derby County 2-1 at Wembley in the Championship playoff final, thanks to goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn.
Tuanzebe played the full 90 minutes at centre back, and the Manchester Evening News believe he may now be returning to Old Trafford at the ideal time to kickstart his career there. That’s hardly surprising considering how underwhelming United have been at the back this season, especially in the heart of defence, and how crucial he became for the Villans during their promotion push.
But is he good enough? Do United need ready-made stars now? Should the Red Devils cash in on the 21-year-old while the going is good? Some of the writers here at Football FanCast have their say on Tuanzebe’s future at United below…
Who is your club’s worst ever January signing? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked theirs in the video below and they didn’t disappoint…
James Beavis
“He has a future, without a doubt. At the Manchester United of old there may well have been no place for the 21-year-old, but they aren’t the same club right now and he is no worse than Smalling and Jones. The Red Devils targeting Swansea’s Dan James proves that they are ready to put their faith in young players, and Tuanzebe fits the bill in that regard and deserves a chance. It’s time for Solskjaer to roll the dice on the promising defender.”
Jack Saville
“Tuanzebe’s excellent season at Aston Villa proves he has what it takes to thrive under Solskjaer. United’s defence has grown stale and unfit for purpose in recent years, but the academy product could be the breath of fresh air it’s crying out for. A defensive unit featuring Tuanzebe alongside Victor Lindelof with Luke Shaw and Diego Dalot either side could provide a surprising yet solid foundation for future success.”
Billy Meyers
“Tuanzebe definitely has a future at Old Trafford. Solskjaer has been keen to give youth a chance since taking the reins, throwing the likes of James Garner, Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood in at the deep end. The funny thing is that Tuanzebe is far, far more experienced than all of them, and can provide serious competition to Smalling and Jones at the back.”
