Since first breaking onto the scene with Juventus and Italy, Sebastian Giovinco has had all the makings of a fine young talent who could seemingly go on to achieve great things in the game.
The Atomic Ant, as the petit Italian forward has been fondly nicknamed during his time in Serie A, didn’t take long to attract the attention of the Premier League for his silky exploits on the pitch. Giovinco was reported to be closely followed by Arsenal, until Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs became the latest big side to register an interest in landing the Italian.
Whilst the former Juventus no. 12 wouldn’t go amiss down at White Hart Lane right now, Sebastian Giovinco has somewhat surprised the footballing community by signing with Canadian MLS outfit, Toronto FC. In light of such news, have Toronto got themselves a good deal on their hands, and have Tottenham missed out on a really promising signing?
The number one problem surrounding Giovinco at this stage of his career, is the distinct lack of consistency that has failed to see his game develop in the way many had initially hoped. Especially under Massimiliano Allegri during spells this season, the tricky winger has largely had to operate from the bench with the Serie A Champions, and as the Italian is now 27-years-old, Giovinco’s ‘bedding-in’ time has long been over.

Temporary loans to both Empoli, where a young Giovinco plied his trade in the early stages of his career, and Parma, a move that turned out to be a surprisingly good fit for the 5 ft. 5 attacker, ultimately done very little to tie down a first team place at Juventus.
Such news comes as a shame, however, as although some concerns have been raised over his level of reliability and efficiency, Sebastian Giovinco is certainly a gifted player. His low centre of gravity hands him the ability to beat players with ease, find his team-mates with great vision, and score goals that simply keep the opposition guessing. Whilst this seemingly easy formula hasn’t always produced the results for Juventus’ forgotten man, his class is definitely present.
Since falling down the pecking order at Juventus, an illustrious move to the Premier League could have been that perfect move. Yes – Giovinco’s small stature and seeming disadvantage in physical battles raises some questions as to whether or not the Italian could fit in in England, but with the likes of Bojan, David Silva and Santi Cazorla all proving it’s possible, there is no reason why the Italian couldn’t do the same.
Tottenham, with their heavy reliance on Harry Kane, really could have done with someone like Giovinco at this stage in the season. Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado have fired mostly blanks of late, the tricky Italian could have potentially worked wonders alongside the likes of Christian Erikson in the final third.
Although fans of the Premier League would have likely taken to Sebastian Giovinco’s entertaining style, his shock move to Toronto FC has seemingly killed any news linking him to England. As many deals with North American clubs often involve loan deals back to Europe, however, perhaps we haven’t quite seen the end of Giovinco closer to home, even if his reported talks to join Spurs have seemingly gone out the window.
Whatever the future has in store for the impressive star, a move to the Premier League now seems unlikely, even if Spurs fans are still holding out hope of eventually bringing the exciting Italian to White Hart Lane.
