Out of favour England international Danny Rose must make the left-back spot at Tottenham Hotspur his own after Luke Shaw signed a new Manchester United contract.
What’s the word?
Spurs have long been admirers of the 23-year-old from Kingston upon Thames but failed in their advances throughout the summer whilst the full back appeared out of favour with Jose Mourinho.
Shaw played under Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton before making his big move to Old Trafford in 2014 and appeared to open the door for the Argentinean coach’s current club to come and get him last year.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Shaw claimed Pochettino ‘used to call me his son,’ and ‘made me feel that I was the best,’ before rounding off with ‘I do hope that I can play for him again one day. And I think he really wants me to play under him again.’
Big words for someone who then was on the fringe of Mourinho’s side, but has now agreed to a lucrative five-year deal having forced his way into the Portuguese manager’s plans.
What now for Spurs?
With the club’s summer target no longer on the market, attention must be turned back in house with their own outcast the best option at left-back.
Rose has been a key player for Spurs every season since the end of his Sunderland loan in 2013, but found himself almost out of the door in the last transfer window.
Regularly the Leeds youth graduate was linked with an exit from North London, but no arrangements could be made and he remained at the Lillywhites.
Ben Davies had been the man likely to step up to fill Rose’s place, but has so far underperformed when called upon leaving a return available for Rose.
